DLNA ( Digital Living Network Alliance )

Digital Living Network Alliance (DLNA) is an organization which provide interoperability guidelines for all the leading consumer electronics like mobile devices, personal computers, digital home media etc. They generally provide the guidelines which has open industry standards. No single manufacturer, guarantees you that he is specialize in all digital media components, neither all the consumer buy all the devices from the same manufacturer. So there should be compatibility between all the devices and DLNA certified products allow interoperability between these devices. The interoperability guidelines are the key component of a product's functionality, their set-up and their simple inter-working. The Interoperability Guidelines also used to build platforms and software infrastructure. In case of mobile devices, DLNA has specified some common formats for audio, images, and video so that they can be operated by different users.

Digital Living Network Alliance formerly known as the Digital Home Working Group and originally developed by Sony and Intel in June of 2003. At that time they have only 17 member companies but now they have more than 140 member organization which representing 14 countries. The products which pass this certification are allowed to use the DLNA certified logo. But before to get certified from DLNA, products have undergo through the severe testing process and after passing these tests they get DLNA certification Logo. For this DLNA organization has setup many DLNA-accredited testing laboratories in different countries like US, Japan etc.

The basic idea behind the DLNA interoperability guidelines that all types of electronic devices should work together across a wired or wireless network. It includes sharing of digital media to multiple locations through mobile devices and these devices communicate to each other without spending much time to configure them.

The DLNA Certified devices is beneficial for both consumer and manufacturer. For Consumer, in a way that, now he can not be ristricted to single manufacturer. It means, now he can buy products from diffrent manufacturers without worrying about the compatability between them. For manufacturer point of view, developing products that meet the DLNA guidelines, which allow them to target customers who generally purchase products of different companies.

Now a days many companies launch their product with DLNA certification. Nokia which is one of the largest mobile selling company launches their new product Nokia N95 8GB with DLNA certification. The Nokia N95 8GB is the first mobile phone to be certified as a Digital Living Network Alliance device. The DLNA has certified over 1,800 other devices, but the N95 8GB is the first phone to meet the DLNA standards because of its feature like ability to store and share large quantities of photos, music and video. Users can share these photos, music and video with their friends and family on a DLNA Certified home entertainment system. All they need to do is share the content wirelessly from their Nokia N95 8GB.
